Ghana positions itself as West African gas hub amid rising demand

Chief Executive Judith Adjobah Blay of Ghana National Gas highlighted the country's strategy to become a regional energy transit hub. Ghana Gas supplies about 84 % of the fuel for the nation’s thermal power plants, which generate roughly 60 % of electricity, delivering estimated annual savings of US$1.3 billion in fuel costs and US$60 million in LPG subsidies. Partnerships with Sinopec, the West African Gas Pipeline and the proposed African Atlantic Gas Pipeline aim to expand bidirectional gas flow and connect Ghana to broader continental markets. Planned projects include a second gas‑processing plant, a 300‑km on‑shore transmission pipeline and the Pentane Monetisation Project to curb flaring.

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation projects domestic gas demand to soar to around 840 million standard cubic feet per day by 2030 and one billion cubic feet per day by 2036, outstripping local production and even potential imports from Nigeria. To avoid supply deficits, GNPC is completing the Tema LNG import terminal (95 % finished) and has mobilised over US$3.5 billion for upstream optimisation, including US$2 billion for the Jubilee and TEN fields and US$1.5 billion for the Sankofa‑Gye Nyame consortium. Officials warn that without rapid mid‑stream expansion, the surge could strain the national grid and limit industrial growth.
