Ghana to launch TRAFFITECH-GH automated traffic enforcement system
Ghana is set to implement TRAFFITECH-GH, an automated traffic law enforcement system, starting in November 2026. The program, managed by the Ghana Police Service and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), utilizes cameras and digital devices to detect violations and issue Electronic Notices of Violation (ENV) via SMS to registered vehicle owners.
Under the new Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L. I. 2519), fines are calculated based on penalty units. For example, driving under the influence can result in fines ranging from GH¢600 to GH¢2,400, while jumping a red light may incur penalties between GH¢120 and GH¢360. Other offenses include using a mobile phone while driving and failing to yield at signs.
CUTS International has urged the MTTD to delay the rollout until January 2027, citing concerns over inadequate road infrastructure. The organization argues that faulty traffic lights, faded road markings, and obstructed signage must be addressed to ensure the technology functions effectively. Critics also emphasize the need for better public sensitization and accurate vehicle databases to prevent erroneous fines.
