Ghana prepares for launch of automated Traffitech-GH traffic enforcement system

Ghana is preparing to launch its first fully automated traffic enforcement regime, known as Traffitech-GH, on October 1, 2026. The Ghana Police Service has completed its final nationwide training sessions for officers to manage the system, with the most recent workshop held in Ho, Volta Region.

The training involved participants from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the Judicial Service, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), the National Insurance Commission (NIC), and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA). The program focused on the legal framework, including the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L. I. 2519) and the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1153), as well as the practical processing of automated fines.

Cecil Ebow Garbrah, CEO of Toptech Ghana, shared a personal experience with an automated speed monitoring system that sent a speeding notification to a vehicle owner after he exceeded the limit while driving a borrowed car. He noted that the system uses registration details, such as the Ghana Card and phone numbers, to link violations to owners, though he emphasized that public education will be necessary as motorists adjust to the new technology.
