Ghana and Nigeria announce major security service promotions

In separate administrative developments, security services in Ghana and Nigeria have announced significant leadership promotions.

In Ghana, President John Dramani Mahama has approved the promotion of 15 officers within the Ghana Prisons Service. This restructuring includes the elevation of seven Deputy Directors of Prisons to the rank of Directors of Prisons and eight Assistant Directors of Prisons to Deputy Directors of Prisons. The appointments, which took effect on July 1, 2026, follow the advice of the Prisons Service Council and comply with the 1992 Constitution. Promoted officers include regional commanders from the Western, Bono-Ahafo, Greater Accra, and Central regions.

In Nigeria, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of several thousand police officers following successful examinations and interviews. The scale of the promotions includes the appointment of two Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, Olaolu Adegbite and Dankombo F. Morris, as well as 10 Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and 17 Commissioners of Police. The commission also elevated hundreds of officers across various other ranks, including Assistant Commissioners and Superintendents.
