Ghana President Mahama Appoints New Defence and Environment Ministers

President John Dramani Mahama announced a cabinet reshuffle on 7 August 2026. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei was moved from the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources to become Ghana’s Defence Minister, replacing the late Dr Edward Omane Boamah, who died in a military helicopter crash on 6 August 2025. Dr Zanetor Agyemang‑Rawlings, MP for Klottey‑Korle and daughter of former President Jerry Rawlings, was nominated as Minister of State for Environment, Science and Technology. Mahama Ayariga was reassigned to the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and James Agalga was appointed as the new Majority Leader of Parliament. The nominations have been submitted to Parliament for approval under Article 78(1) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution. The reshuffle is presented as a move to strengthen governance, address regional security challenges in the Sahel and Gulf of Guinea, and tackle illegal mining and climate‑related issues.
