Ghana President Mahama Launches Health Sovereignty Initiatives and Expands Vaccine Research Facilities
President John Dramani Mahama hosted senior UN health officials, including UN Under‑Secretary‑General Winnie Byanyima, at Ghana’s Jubilee House to discuss the continent’s public‑health strategy. He highlighted the “Accra Reset”, an Africa‑led effort to reduce aid dependency and boost vaccine production, and announced the Free Primary Health Care programme that will provide free basic services at primary facilities without requiring insurance cards.
Mahama also inspected the newly completed University of Health and Allied Sciences laboratory complex in Ho, declaring it a milestone for Ghana’s research capacity. He noted, “If we had completed this project on time, we would have spent far less resources in bringing it to completion. But as they say, better late than never.” The facility will support pathogen research, vaccine development and disease surveillance, and “will work closely with the National Vaccine Institute,” strengthening Ghana’s health security.
These steps aim to position Ghana as a hub for health innovation and to improve universal health coverage across Africa.
