Ghana President Mahama opens 24‑hour market and pushes Komenda sugar factory revival

President John Dramani Mahama inaugurated the construction of a 24‑hour economy model market in Assin North, Central Region. The GH₵30 million project will operate around the clock and include facilities such as a police station, fire service, clinic, bank, cold‑storage, restaurants, warehouses, a daycare centre and waste‑treatment systems. It is part of the government’s 24‑Hour Economy Policy, which aims to modernise trade, create jobs and stimulate continuous commercial activity across all districts.

During the same tour, Mahama announced that talks are progressing with a private investor to revive the long‑idle Komenda Sugar Factory. The revival is intended to boost Ghana’s manufacturing sector, reduce reliance on imported refined sugar and generate employment. The president said any restriction on sugar imports would be introduced only after the factory can demonstrably meet domestic demand, with a phased reduction of imports under consideration. Both initiatives are presented as drivers of regional economic growth and industrialisation in the Central Region.
