Ghana President Mahama orders Zoomlion to open waste transfer stations in Accra

President John Dramani Mahama directed the immediate operationalisation of all six waste transfer stations managed by Zoomlion Ghana Limited in the Greater Accra Region. The stations—located at Achimota, Teshie, Kpone, Ashaiman, Pantang and Adipa—had never been put into use, forcing waste collectors to travel long distances. Mahama said, “Unfortunately, they were not put into operation. So, we have asked the contractor, Zoomlion, to open the transfer stations …”.

Under the new arrangement, Zoomlion will dispatch heavy‑duty trucks to move waste from the stations to approved disposal sites such as the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP) and the Accra Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP). The company confirmed the stations are now receiving waste and has mobilised about 150 haulage trucks, 30 compactors, road sweepers, more than 2,000 tricycle operators and over 1,000 Zoomlion staff, plus an additional 60 long‑haul trailers.

The directive was announced during the second day of a national clean‑up exercise on July 11, with the President urging residents to join the effort and promising that the military and other agencies will continue waste removal until drains are cleared, emphasizing Ghana’s and Accra’s resilience after recent floods.
