Ghana public schools to resume after teacher strike suspension
Public basic schools in Ghana are set to resume normal academic activities on Monday, October 12, following the suspension of a nationwide strike by pre-tertiary teacher unions. The strike, which began on September 25, 2026, was halted after agreements were reached with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) regarding outstanding allowances and arrears.
Union leaders from the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers have urged members to return to classrooms. The suspension followed discussions involving the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment and the Council of State.
Dr. George Smith-Graham, CEO of the FWSC, stated that arrears related to promotion and placement would be paid to 51,000 teachers by October 16, with the remaining payments expected by the end of the month. Additionally, the government is expected to announce modalities for deprived-area allowances in January 2027, while negotiations for digital instruction support allowances have concluded with payments expected in November 2026.
