Ghana reaffirms withdrawal of SADR recognition

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed its decision to withdraw recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), stating that the move made on January 6, 2025, remains in force.

The clarification follows media reports suggesting a shift in Ghana’s foreign policy after a meeting between Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and a representative of the Polisario Front. The Ministry clarified that the individual met was an envoy and not an accredited ambassador, rejecting claims that the meeting signaled a reversal of Ghana’s diplomatic stance.

Ghana reiterated its support for the United Nations-led political process regarding the Sahara. The government welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which supports negotiations based on Morocco’s autonomy proposal to reach a lasting political solution in accordance with the UN Charter.
