Ghana rejects MTN Ghana's GH¢20m donation for South Africa victims
The Government of Ghana has declined a GH¢20 million (approximately US$1.8 million) donation from MTN Ghana intended to support citizens affected by xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
MTN Ghana Board Chairman Dr. Ishmael Yamson stated the fund was comprised of an initial GH¢10 million 'welcome back' package for returnees and an additional GH¢10 million to establish a long-term fund for rebuilding livelihoods.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the refusal, stating that the government has already secured adequate financial arrangements to manage the evacuation and reintegration of affected Ghanaians.
The decision has sparked public debate. Some commentators support the move as a strong diplomatic statement against the treatment of African nationals in South Africa, while others argue the funds could have been used to bolster national development or provide additional relief to affected families.
