Ghana removes over 4,200 migrants and beggars since 2025

Ghanaian Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has reported that the government has removed over 4,200 migrant beggars and illegal immigrants since 2025. This figure includes 2,281 migrant beggars and 774 illegal immigrants linked to transnational organized crime removed by the end of 2025, followed by an additional 960 beggars and 186 illegal immigrants removed from cities like Accra and Kumasi by July 2026.

The Minister stated that while Ghana remains a stable destination for those fleeing regional instability, the government must balance its tradition of hospitality with the need to protect national security and public order. He emphasized that enforcement actions are being conducted in accordance with the ECOWAS Protocol on the Free Movement of Persons and with respect for human dignity.

Addressing broader security and social issues, the Minister noted that the primary challenge in managing irregular migration is scale rather than political will. He announced that logistical support has been earmarked to strengthen border controls and increase the capacity of security agencies. Additionally, the Minister reported on drug enforcement efforts, noting the interception of over 8.5 tonnes of narcotics and the recovery of various assets linked to money laundering.
