Ghana repatriates 216 citizens from South Africa amid xenophobic attacks
The Ghanaian government announced that it repatriated 216 of its citizens from South Africa over a three‑day period after a wave of xenophobic violence against migrants from Ghana, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi. Nearly 800 additional Ghanaian nationals have enrolled in a voluntary return programme that will use chartered flights, and more than 900 Ghanaian citizens had already returned in May and June.
The foreign ministry condemned the killing of a 40‑year‑old Ghanaian in Cape Town last month. South African authorities report that over 25,000 foreign nationals have left or been deported in recent months. The African Union said it will call on South Africa to issue an official response, while Nigeria said it is compiling damage assessments for its citizens and may seek reparations. Anti‑immigrant protests are being organised by a movement calling itself "March and March," and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has repeatedly denounced the attacks.
