Ghana reports 2,151 road deaths in first nine months of 2026

Ghana's Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) reported that between January and September 2026, the country experienced 10,157 road crashes involving 17,197 vehicles. These accidents resulted in 2,151 deaths and 12,230 injuries.

However, recent data indicates a downward trend in accidents. In September 2026, road fatalities decreased by 7.82% and overall crashes fell by 9.48%. This decline follows intensified police enforcement and public education campaigns.

In preparation for a nationwide automated speed-enforcement system scheduled to launch on November 1, 2026, police began issuing electronic violation and caution notices on September 10. This system uses sensors to detect speeding and provides drivers with video evidence of infractions to encourage safer driving habits.
