Ghana risks intelligence sharing cuts due to insider criminal links

Ghanaian Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has warned that the country risks losing critical intelligence-sharing partnerships due to allegations of insider collusion with criminal syndicates. The Minister stated that foreign security counterparts are becoming reluctant to provide sensitive information because they fear it will be leaked by Ghanaian officials who have been entrusted with high-level security roles.

According to the Minister, these leaks undermine the confidence of international partners. He specifically noted that authorities in Australia and France have been hesitant to cooperate in joint operations. This lack of cooperation follows incidents such as the interception of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine hidden in a plastic waste container shipped from Ghana to Dunkirk, France.

Mohammed-Mubarak emphasized that while personnel in sensitive positions undergo rigorous background checks and training, some are allegedly trading their positions for personal gain. He cautioned that without a significant change in attitude among security personnel, the country's security vulnerabilities will remain unaddressed.
