Kumasi and Accra Mayors Boost Sanitation and Food Safety Efforts in Ghana
Kumasi Mayor Honourable Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi said the city’s sanitation drive will rely on continued public support and media cooperation. The municipal assembly has begun weekly inspections in electoral areas, resulting in only 13 arrests during the first phase and plans to move the exercise from Nhyiaeso to Krofuom, Bantama and Asafo. The mayor also pledged to fund a new washroom for the Kumasi court after criticism of its dilapidated urinal.
Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey equipped Environmental Health Officers, known as “Tankas,” with body bags, masks, gloves, boots and disinfectants to enforce food‑safety by‑laws following recent floods. The equipment aims to improve inspections of markets and prevent sale of flood‑contaminated food, with violations subject to legal action.
Okere Coordinating Director urged Ghanaian citizens to appreciate government spending on sanitation, emphasizing its role in public health and environmental cleanliness.
