Ghana security forces arrest dozens in illegal mining crackdown

Security forces in Ghana have conducted extensive operations against illegal mining, resulting in numerous arrests and the seizure of heavy equipment. The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) reported arresting 40 suspects and seizing various tools across six regions, including Western North, Western, Ashanti, Ahafo, Savannah, and Eastern. These intelligence-led operations targeted riverine communities and forest reserves, leading to the destruction of water pumps, generators, and makeshift structures.

In a separate coordinated effort, the Mpohor-Fiase District Assembly deployed a joint taskforce comprising the Ghana Armed Forces, Police Service, Immigration Service, and the Bureau of National Investigations. This operation resulted in the arrest of 26 suspected illegal miners and the seizure of 14 pumping machines and several motorbikes. Local authorities stated that these district-level initiatives are intended to complement the nationwide mandate of NAIMOS to protect natural resources and safeguard the environment.
