Ghana illegal mining enforcement operations

Overview

Ghanaian authorities have intensified operations to combat illegal mining, known as galamsey, across multiple regions.

Initial enforcement actions by the Forestry Commission in the Bosomtwe Range Forest Reserve resulted in the arrest of 12 suspects and the seizure of heavy machinery, including an excavator and various water-pumping machines. One suspected kingpin reportedly escaped the raid.

Following these efforts, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) expanded the crackdown, reporting the arrest of 40 suspects across six regions: Western North, Western, Ashanti, Ahafo, Savannah, and Eastern. These intelligence-led operations targeted forest reserves and riverine communities, leading to the destruction of makeshift structures and equipment. Additionally, a joint taskforce involving the Ghana Armed Forces, Police Service, Immigration Service, and the Bureau of National Investigations conducted coordinated operations in the Mpohor-Fiase District, arresting 26 suspects.
