Ghana shares energy efficiency regulatory expertise with Nigeria

Ghana is sharing its regulatory expertise in energy efficiency with Nigeria to improve electrical equipment standards across the region. A technical delegation from Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Power recently conducted a three-day study tour of the Energy Commission of Ghana. The visit focused on Ghana’s implementation of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and its energy labelling programme, specifically examining how standards are developed, enforced, and monitored in the market.

Domestically, the Energy Commission is also conducting outreach to reduce electricity costs within Ghana’s hospitality sector. In collaboration with the Ghana Hotels Association, the Commission has launched a training programme for hotel operators in the Bono East region. This initiative aims to help businesses manage energy use more effectively, as electricity typically accounts for 60% to 70% of hotel operating costs. The programme is part of a broader campaign to improve energy management, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and lower national electricity generation costs.
