Ghana signs $270m preliminary poultry industry investment deal
Ghana's 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Secretariat has signed a $270 million ‘Heads of Terms’ agreement to revitalize the nation's poultry industry. The preliminary agreement involves the Tony Blair Institute, Agrium Capital, Petra Pension Trust, and Axis Pension Trust.
The investment aims to establish an integrated poultry value chain, including feed production, hatcheries, commercial farming, processing, cold-chain infrastructure, and distribution networks. The initiative is designed to boost domestic production and reduce Ghana's heavy reliance on imported chicken, which currently costs the country approximately $400 million in foreign exchange annually.
While the agreement marks a formal step toward implementation, it is a statement of intent and is not yet legally binding. Agrium Capital CEO Rod Bassett indicated that the project is expected to be developed through a proprietary process over 10 to 12 months, rolled out in three phases.
