Ghana poultry industry investment and development

Overview

Ghana has initiated efforts to revitalize its poultry industry through large-scale investment and infrastructure development. In late August 2026, the nation’s 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Secretariat signed a $270 million ‘Heads of Terms’ agreement with several entities, including the Tony Blair Institute and Agrium Capital. This preliminary, non-binding agreement aims to establish an integrated value chain covering feed production, hatcheries, commercial farming, and distribution to reduce the $400 million annual foreign exchange cost of poultry imports.

By early September 2026, the initiative progressed to securing over 1 billion Ghanaian cedis in financial commitments. The Ghana Export Acceleration Authority and the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat plan to use these funds to support equipment, processing, and veterinary services. The first phase is expected to utilize approximately 300 million Ghanaian cedis. Private sector institutions such as ABSA, Fidelity, and Ecobank are slated to participate by providing customized lending solutions. The program seeks to address a significant trade gap where local production accounted for only 4.6% of demand in 2022.
