Ghana Stock Exchange trading turnover rises 145% in a week
The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) experienced a sharp surge in trading activity for the week ending August 21, 2026. Total equities turnover rose 145.35% from the previous week to GH¢76.91 million, with 17.87 million shares traded. Despite this increased volume, the GSE Composite Index fell 1.12% to 15,136.72, and the GSE Financial Stocks Index declined 2.36% to 7,925.05.
Trading was heavily concentrated in the information and communications technology sector, which accounted for 62.64% of the weekly traded value. MTN Ghana was the most active stock by value, generating GH¢47.58 million in turnover, followed by GCB Bank with GH¢14.00 million.
On a year-to-date basis, the market has shown significant growth. The GSE Composite Index has gained 72.59% since the start of 2026. GSE Managing Director Abena Amoah noted that monthly trades have increased from approximately 25,000 last year to 300,000 this year, signaling a rise in retail investor participation. This renewed activity follows a period of limited initial public offering (IPO) activity, with recent listings including First Atlantic Bank PLC, Zen Petroleum, and Kasapreko PLC.
