Ghana targets non-tariff barriers to boost intra-African trade

Ghana is intensifying efforts to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by addressing non-tariff barriers and positioning local products for continental markets. During a meeting in Accra with African Union Commissioner Francisca Tatchoup Belobe, Ghana’s Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, highlighted that non-tariff barriers present more complex challenges for exporters than traditional tariffs.

To facilitate smoother trade, the Ghanaian government is focusing on enhancing cooperation regarding standards and conformity assessments. The goal is to achieve mutual recognition of standards across African borders, reducing bottlenecks and helping exporters meet diverse market requirements.

Additionally, Ghana is working to prepare local industries—including agribusiness, textiles, garments, and pharmaceuticals—to compete more effectively. Support programs are being implemented to build capacity, with a specific emphasis on assisting women-owned enterprises. The government aims to create stronger links between Ghanaian producers and continental buyers to ensure products such as gari and garments can successfully reach new consumers.
