Ghana teacher unions continue nationwide strike over unresolved demands
Ghanaian teacher unions, including GNAT, NAGRAT, and PRETAG, are maintaining a nationwide strike over three primary demands: the automatic placement of promoted teachers on new salary levels, the conclusion of a new collective agreement, and the implementation of a 20 per cent deprived-area allowance.
Recent high-level negotiations between the government and union leadership ended inconclusively. While the government has presented new proposals, the unions have not yet reached an agreement. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has appealed for an end to the industrial action, pledging that all outstanding promotion arrears will be addressed by October 30, 2026.
Regional leadership in Greater Accra and the Eastern Region have expressed solidarity with national executives, urging them to remain firm until concrete progress is demonstrated. The unions have rejected calls to suspend the strike, stating that previous government assurances have not resulted in tangible action.
