Ghana teacher unions suspend nationwide strike over salary disputes
Major teacher unions in Ghana, including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG), have suspended a planned nationwide strike. The decision follows negotiations with the Ministry of Education to resolve disputes regarding salary-scale placements for promoted teachers.
The government has committed to placing approximately 80,000 teachers on their correct salary scales. To facilitate this, the Ghana Education Service (GES) will provide necessary data to the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department, with the goal of completing placements and payments by September.
As part of the agreement, administrative requirements have been streamlined. Teachers will no longer be required to travel to district or regional education offices to submit physical payslips to secure their salary-scale adjustments. Union leaders have stated they will monitor the implementation process to ensure the government adheres to these timelines.
