Ghana to build mega palm oil processing plant in Akyem Abuakwa
The Mahama administration announced plans to construct one of Ghana’s largest palm oil processing facilities in the Akyem Abuakwa traditional area of the Eastern Region. Chief of Staff Dr. Julius Debrah made the announcement at the Ohum Festival in Kyebi, saying the project – a combined plantation and processing factory – is intended to create thousands of jobs and stimulate industrial growth.
The government is seeking land from local chiefs, including Okyehene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, to launch the venture, which aims to position Akyem Abuakwa as a “red‑gold” enclave for the global palm oil market. Officials highlighted the sector’s $67 billion‑plus value and projected growth, noting the potential economic benefits for farmers, businesses, and young workers in the region.
