Ghana President Mahama announces hospital emergency unit expansions

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a strategic plan to expand emergency units at four major hospitals to combat the country’s “no-bed syndrome.” The expansion, scheduled to begin in 2027, will target Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Tamale Teaching Hospital, and the 37 Military Hospital.

Under the new initiative, each facility is required to reserve at least 10 per cent of its functional beds for emergency care. For instance, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, which currently has 65 emergency beds out of 1,500 functional beds, would see its capacity increase to at least 150. The government pledged to support these expansions with additional medical personnel, equipment, oxygen, and essential supplies.

To improve coordination, the Ministry of Health is piloting an Integrated Bed Management and Referral Coordination System (IBMRC). This digital platform will link several major facilities, including the University of Ghana Medical Centre and the National Ambulance Service, to help healthcare teams identify available capacity and manage patient transfers. Additionally, the Ghana Armed Forces Critical Care and Emergency Hospital has been opened to civilian patients to provide immediate relief for critical cases.
