Ghana healthcare infrastructure expansion
Overview
Ghana is undertaking several initiatives to expand its medical infrastructure and specialist care capabilities. President John Dramani Mahama has directed the establishment of a cardiology centre at the Ho Teaching Hospital by 2027, funded by the Ghana Medical Trust Fund. This project, along with a planned cardiology centre at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, aims to provide specialist heart care to regions outside the capital.
The €50 million La General Hospital project in the Greater Accra Region is progressing toward a scheduled completion by the end of 2027. Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh reported that the 160-bed facility is in the civil works phase, with the main concrete structure in place. Approximately €15 million of the budget has been paid to date, and the Minister noted there are no major challenges or payment delays. To mitigate the “no-bed syndrome,” the hospital will dedicate at least 10 per cent of its beds to emergency care.
To further combat bed shortages, President Mahama announced a strategic plan starting in 2027 to expand emergency units at Korle Bu, Komfo Anokye, Tamale, and 37 Military hospitals. Each facility must reserve at least 10 per cent of functional beds for emergencies. For example, Korle Bu’s emergency capacity is expected to increase from 65 to at least 150 beds. The government will support these efforts with personnel, equipment, and oxygen. Additionally, the Ministry of Health is piloting the Integrated Bed Management and Referral Coordination System (IBMRC) to link major facilities and the National Ambulance Service. The Ghana Armed Forces Critical Care and Emergency Hospital has also opened to civilian patients to provide relief for critical cases.
