Ghana to launch automated traffic cameras and new road regulations
Ghana is implementing new road safety measures, including the launch of automated traffic enforcement cameras starting October 1. While specific camera locations and the full technical capabilities of the system have not yet been disclosed, the technology is expected to monitor traffic law compliance without the direct presence of police officers.
In conjunction with these technological updates, the country has introduced the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2519). These regulations apply to motorists, commercial drivers, pedestrians, and passengers. The new laws outline specific penalties for various infractions, including:
• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs: Fines of 50 to 200 penalty units and potential imprisonment for up to 40 months. • Mobile phone use while driving: Fines of up to 50 penalty units and potential imprisonment for up to three months. • Speeding: Fines of 50 to 100 penalty units and potential imprisonment for three to six months. • Red-light violations and failure to yield at stop signs: Fines of 10 to 30 penalty units and potential imprisonment for up to 30 days.
