Ghana to reintroduce electronic road tolls on improved highways

Ghana’s Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced the reintroduction of road tolls through a multi-lane, free-flow electronic tolling system. This move reverses the 2021 abolition of physical toll booths. The new system is intended to be deployed on all public roads that have received government-funded improvements, utilizing technologies such as radio-frequency identification (RFID) and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) to allow vehicles to pass without stopping.

Additionally, the upcoming Accra-Kumasi Expressway will operate under its own distinct tolling arrangement, separate from the general electronic system. Minister Agbodza noted that the expressway will serve as a faster alternative to existing bypasses, allowing motorists to choose between the quicker route for a fee or the existing roads for free. Revenue generated from these tolls is intended to be reinvested into the expansion of Ghana’s road network.
