Ghana Tourism Authority denies visa payment allegations

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has issued a formal denial regarding allegations that it collected money from applicants in exchange for visas or visa opportunities. The controversy stems from a board-approved initiative intended to showcase Ghana’s culture, music, and creative industries during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The GTA clarified that its role was limited to identifying participants, facilitating institutional introductions, and providing guidance on application procedures. The Authority emphasized that it possesses no authority to issue visas or influence the outcomes of applications, noting that such decisions rest solely with diplomatic and immigration authorities, including the United States Embassy and the Canadian High Commission.

GTA CEO Maame Efua Houadjeto also personally rejected claims of soliciting or authorizing payments to secure visas. The Authority explained that because private-sector sponsorship was not feasible due to high costs, participants were required to cover their own travel, accommodation, and visa application fees. The GTA urged the public to distinguish between legitimate fees paid to independent travel providers and any alleged payments to the Authority or its officials.
