Ghana tourism leaders celebrate excellence and call for infrastructure upgrades

The Greater Accra Regional Tourism Awards 2026 recently celebrated excellence within Ghana’s tourism and hospitality sectors. Held at the Tang Palace Hotel in Accra, the event honored businesses and professionals contributing to the region’s growth under the theme “Celebrating Excellence Beyond Borders – The Black Star Experience.”

During the awards period, Joseph Appiagyei, the Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, advocated for significant infrastructure developments to boost regional tourism. He called for the expedited construction of the Upper East Airport, the extension of the national railway network, and the establishment of an inland port at Paga to facilitate trade and travel.

Appiagyei emphasized the strategic importance of the Upper East Region as a gateway to the Sahel, suggesting that stakeholders target markets in Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Togo. He further recommended that high-end hotels employ French-speaking staff to better serve visitors from Francophone neighboring countries.
