Ghana tourism sector development and promotion

Stakeholders in Ghana’s tourism sector are advocating for increased investment and more diverse marketing strategies to transition the country from a niche to a mainstream destination. Industry leaders have noted that while visitor arrivals are increasing, there is a lack of sufficient hotel capacity and attractions. Recommendations include expanding marketing efforts beyond heritage tourism to include wildlife, adventure, beach, and cultural offerings.

To support long-term interest, the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has launched a children’s book, ‘Ama Ghana’, to introduce young readers to national landmarks. Additionally, GTA leadership has received recognition for contributions to economic and tourism development, while officials have encouraged local entrepreneurship to address national challenges through innovation and investment opportunities.

Recent developments include the Greater Accra Regional Tourism Awards 2026, held under the theme ‘Celebrating Excellence Beyond Borders – The Black Star Experience’. During the event, Joseph Appiagyei, the Upper East Regional Director of the GTA, called for critical infrastructure upgrades to boost regional tourism. Specifically, he advocated for the expedited construction of the Upper East Airport, the extension of the national railway network, and the establishment of an inland port at Paga.

Appiagyei highlighted the Upper East Region’s strategic role as a gateway to the Sahel, suggesting that stakeholders target markets in Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Togo. To better serve these Francophone neighbors, he recommended that high-end hotels employ French-speaking staff.
