Ghana tourism market shows sharp regional occupancy disparities

New data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) reveals significant regional disparities in the country’s tourism accommodation market. An Accommodation Unit Survey conducted between November 2024 and February 2025 shows that while some areas experience high demand, others struggle with low occupancy.

The Central Region maintained strong performance, with bed occupancy rates consistently exceeding 70% throughout the four-month period. The Western Region also showed robust activity, reaching a peak of 77.2% in December 2024. Notably, the Savannah Region recorded the single highest monthly occupancy rate of 63.7% in January 2025.

In contrast, the Eastern, Bono East, and Volta regions faced significant challenges, with occupancy rates remaining below 28% for the duration of the survey. Although Greater Accra holds the nation's largest share of total accommodation capacity, its occupancy rates fluctuated between 41% and 48%.

Nationally, room occupancy averaged between 44.1% and 46.6%. The GSS noted that available room capacity consistently exceeded occupied capacity, highlighting an uneven distribution of tourism activity across Ghana.
