Ghana tourism trends and accommodation occupancy

Overview

Data from the Ghana Statistical Service and the Ghana Tourism Report 2025 highlight a disconnect between tourism volume and accommodation utilization. In 2025, the country recorded 1.79 million visits to 55 tourist sites, a 7 per cent increase from the previous year. Domestic tourism remains the sector’s primary driver, accounting for 84 per cent of all visits. While international arrivals rose by 1.4 per cent to 1,306,962, the average expenditure per international visitor fell from US$3,742.98 in 2024 to US$3,319.90 in 2025.

Despite the rise in visits, the accommodation sector faces significant underutilization. Between March and June 2025, national room occupancy rates hovered around 40 per cent, with occupied room-nights declining from 2.14 million in March to 1.99 million in June. Government Statistician Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu noted that the sector’s challenge is the inability to convert assets and business travel into sustained overnight stays, suggesting the opportunity lies in utilizing existing capacity rather than expanding it.

Occupancy disparities persist by establishment type: hostels maintained high rates between 92.9 per cent and 96.1 per cent, while hotels averaged approximately one-third occupancy. Regional performance remains uneven; the Central and Western regions report the highest occupancy, whereas the Eastern, Bono East, and North East regions struggle with rates below 25 per cent. Tourism activity is largely concentrated in the Greater Accra, Central, Ashanti, and Eastern regions, with the top 10 sites accounting for 77 per cent of all visits.
