Ghana President Mahama launches Afienya Industrial Park and $10bn economic plan
President John Dramani Mahama has launched the Afienya Industrial Park, a 1,238-acre facility in Greater Accra designed to host over 120 enterprises. The project aims to establish Ghana as a manufacturing and logistics hub for West Africa, leveraging its proximity to the Port of Tema and the Tema-Mpakadan railway line.
To support this industrial expansion, the government introduced the $10 billion New Economy Programme. This initiative involves investing $2 billion annually over four years, with half of the funds dedicated to agriculture and agro-processing, and the remainder supporting industry and infrastructure. The program seeks to boost domestic production, reduce import dependency, and create large-scale employment.
In related developments, the Ghana Employers’ Association (GEA) has called for the 2027 Budget to include fiscal buffers and tax reforms to protect local businesses from global economic shocks. Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare also urged employers to utilize new industrial policies to drive production-led growth. Additionally, President Mahama announced plans to expand rubber production and infrastructure, including an airstrip and stadium, in the Western North Region.
