Ghana local government announces major infrastructure and funding updates

Ghana’s Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has announced several major initiatives and development milestones aimed at improving urban infrastructure and local governance.

A key highlight is the GH¢9.1 billion transfer from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) covering six quarters. This funding has facilitated the completion of 502 classroom blocks, 397 health centers, and 3,081 boreholes.

To address urban congestion, the government is reviewing a pilot contra-flow system for Aayalolo buses to make it a permanent feature through infrastructure changes. Additionally, the Ministry is proposing a street-branding program where corporations can finance urban greenery in exchange for branding rights.

Further transparency measures include the establishment of a Local Government TV platform to broadcast assembly proceedings. The Ministry is also engaging with the World Bank to discuss strategies for building more resilient and sustainable cities.
