Ghanaian local government infrastructure and urban updates

Overview

Ghana’s Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has introduced several initiatives focused on urban infrastructure, funding, and municipal development.

Initial updates highlighted a GH¢9.1 billion transfer from the District Assemblies Common Fund to various local assemblies. This funding has supported the completion of hundreds of classroom blocks, health centers, and boreholes. To manage urban congestion, the government is considering making a pilot contra-flow system for Aayalolo buses permanent through infrastructure modifications. Other transparency and sustainability efforts include the creation of a Local Government TV platform and discussions with the World Bank regarding resilient city strategies.

Building on these developments, the Ministry is now seeking to attract private capital for city beautification. Under a proposed framework, corporations such as banks and manufacturing firms can fund the reconstruction, lighting, and greening of streets and landmarks in exchange for exclusive advertising and naming rights. Furthermore, the Ministry is finalizing a national waste management programme intended to utilize modern recycling techniques and create approximately 20,000 jobs.
