Ghana transport council cites coin shortage for fare rounding
The Ghana Road Transport Coordinated Council (GRTCC) has attributed recent discrepancies in transport fares to a shortage of coins in circulation. Following a government-approved 8% fare increase, passengers have reported being charged amounts exceeding the official rates, leading to confusion and complaints at various terminals.
GRTCC General Secretary Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah stated that the lack of available coins makes providing exact change difficult, forcing some drivers to round fares up to the nearest average. While acknowledging the issue, Yeboah noted that the Council expects operators to adhere as closely as possible to the officially approved rates and cautioned against arbitrary overcharging.
The 8% adjustment, which took effect recently following negotiations between transport operators and the Ministry of Transport, was implemented to offset rising operational costs, including fuel and spare parts. Passengers have expressed frustration over non-uniform pricing, noting that charges vary significantly between different drivers and routes.
