Ghana transport fare hike paused following government talks

A proposed 30% increase in transport fares by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has been put on hold following direct negotiations between the union and the government. National Petroleum Authority (NPA) CEO Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe stated that the government and the Ministry of Transport are engaging with operators to address rising costs.

Despite the pause in fare hikes, fuel prices continue to rise. The NPA increased the price floor for petrol to GH¢16 per litre and diesel to GH¢16.77 per litre, effective September 16, 2026. Tamakloe noted that while fuel is the primary cost driver, insurance costs have remained stable and the stability of the cedi has helped limit costs for imported spare parts.

Separately, the GPRTU has officially distanced itself from a strike threat issued by the Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA), urging drivers to remain patient while the union's committee prepares a report on the way forward.
