Ghana transport unions announce 8% fare increase for public services

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have announced an 8% increase in public transport fares, effective Saturday, September 26, 2026. The adjustment applies to shared taxis, intra-city trotros, inter-city long-distance services, and haulage services across Ghana.

The fare hike is based on the approved rates from May 24, 2025. Transport unions cited rising operational costs, including changes in ex-pump petroleum prices, vehicle maintenance, and the cost of spare parts, as the primary drivers for the increase. They noted that government intervention regarding diesel prices helped moderate the total adjustment.

Specific changes include intra-city trotros, where a GH¢5 fare will rise to GH¢5.50 and a GH¢34 fare will increase to GH¢36.80. Shared taxi fares for journeys up to 4km will rise from GH¢2.60 to GH¢2.90. Inter-city services will also see adjustments, such as a GH¢100 fare increasing to GH¢108 and a GH¢300 fare rising to GH¢324. Operators have been directed to display the new schedules at terminals and face sanctions for overcharging.
