Ghana transport unions demand clearance of bus stops and protest new camera system
Transport unions in Ghana have issued a one-week ultimatum to the government to clear traders from bus stops and pedestrian walkways. The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana stated that the occupation of transit hubs in areas such as Accra, Madina, and Takoradi disrupts passenger services and creates safety risks ahead of the full implementation of the TraffiTech-GH automated enforcement system on November 1, 2026.
Simultaneously, transport operators are expressing strong opposition to the TraffiTech-GH system itself. The Drivers and Car Owners Association has criticized the proposed financial penalties, describing them as excessively harsh and economically unfeasible for motorists. The association’s national chairman, Akwasi Amoah, warned of potential resistance against the punitive measures, arguing that the government should focus on structural improvements, such as upgrading driving schools and road infrastructure, rather than relying on automated ticketing and increased police enforcement.
