Ghana transport unions seek fare hikes amid dispute over operating costs

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) is seeking urgent engagement with the Ministry of Transport to address rising operational costs for commercial drivers. GPRTU General Secretary Godfred Abulbire stated that growing frustration among drivers stems from rising diesel prices and maintenance expenses. The union noted that while they previously reduced fares by 15 percent when fuel prices fell, the current economic climate may necessitate restoring those rates if a broader fare adjustment is not secured through official negotiations.

However, the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has rejected the GPRTU’s claims that rising spare parts costs justify a proposed 30 percent increase in transport fares. The association described these claims as “false and misleading,” asserting that prices for essential components like engine oil and filters have remained stable. The dealers accused transport operators of using the fare hike to pressure the government and “extort money from ordinary Ghanaians,” calling for any adjustments to be based on “verifiable economic indicators.”
