Ghana transport unions seek fare review amid rising fuel costs
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have formally requested a review of public transport fares from the Ministry of Transport. This request follows a marginal increase in petroleum prices, with petrol rising approximately 5% to GH¢16.21 per litre and diesel increasing by roughly 2.58% to GH¢17.61 per litre.
Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, CEO of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), has rejected the unions' potential fare hikes, describing them as an attempt to “hold the entire country to ransom.” Tameklo argued that the move is unjustified given government interventions, such as the GH₵2 fuel subsidy extended to September 2026, and noted that transport operators previously refused to lower fares when fuel prices dropped to 10 cedis per litre.
The GPRTU and GRTCC stated that the review process follows established administrative frameworks and urged the public to remain calm while consultations with the Ministry of Transport commence.
