Ghana transport unions suspend 30% fare hike after government talks

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) had announced a planned 30% increase in transport fares, citing rising fuel prices, vehicle maintenance costs and other operational expenses. After a closed‑door meeting with the Ministry of Transport, the union's deputy public relations officer, Samuel Amoah, said the government assured it was taking steps to lower petroleum product prices. Consequently, the union decided to suspend the fare increase pending the outcome of the upcoming fuel‑price review scheduled for Friday. Amoah warned the suspension could be lifted if fuel prices rise again in the next pricing window. Current fuel costs were reported at about GH¢17.78 per litre for diesel and GH¢14.95 per litre for petrol. The decision provides temporary relief to commuters and commercial drivers while the government works on fuel‑price measures.
