Ghana transport unions suspend fare hikes following diesel subsidy

Ghana's major road transport unions, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), have suspended a planned increase in public transport fares. This decision follows a meeting with the Ministry of Transport on September 8, 2026.

The suspension was prompted by the government's introduction of a GH₵2.00 per litre diesel subsidy. The unions and the Ministry have agreed to form a joint committee to evaluate how this fuel subsidy affects overall operating costs before making a final determination on any fare adjustments for the 2026 window.

Until the review is complete, existing approved fares remain in effect across the country. The unions have instructed drivers, station masters, and transport owners to maintain current rates to ensure fairness for both operators and commuters.
