Ghana University Administrators resume strike over service conditions
The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has resumed industrial action, citing the government's failure to resolve long-standing concerns regarding conditions of service in public universities.
GAUA General Secretary Charles Kwadwo Aidoo stated that deteriorating conditions are making university roles increasingly unattractive to highly skilled professionals. The association reports difficulty in recruiting and retaining essential staff, including medical doctors, lawyers, accountants, and senior managers. Aidoo noted that some positions remain unfilled despite repeated recruitment efforts, which could impact the effective administration and service delivery of Ghana's higher education institutions.
The strike follows a period of suspension after assurances from the Education Minister. However, GAUA members decided to return to industrial action after negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) reportedly stalled. The association indicated a willingness to call off the strike within the month if meaningful progress is made on their outstanding issues.
