Ghana university administrators industrial action
Overview
The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) continues its industrial action over long-standing grievances regarding salary structures and service conditions. While the strike previously disrupted operations at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), the University of Ghana, and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the impact has intensified.
By October 13, 2026, GAUA President Rev. Kwaku Karikari Amoah stated that the association would not decide whether to suspend the strike until the National Executive Council reviews a formal proposal from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. Although Amoah noted that approximately 80 per cent of the issues triggering the action have been addressed, the association remains unsatisfied following meetings with Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu. The Minister has appealed for a return to work to ensure academic activities can resume by October 18, 2026.
The strike is actively threatening the government’s efforts to restore the pre-COVID academic calendar. Prof. Yarhands Dissou Arthur, a dean at the University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (USTED), warned that the disruption is already affecting academic work, particularly for first-year students whose classes were scheduled to begin.
