Ghana University Administrators strike continues amid stalled government talks

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) reports that two months of negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) have failed to produce significant progress. National General Secretary Charles Jojo Aidoo stated that the association has presented six to seven major grievances, none of which have been resolved.

While some issues involve negotiated and approved allowances, the association emphasizes that many concerns relate to long-standing disparities in conditions of service. GAUA members, which include professionals such as lawyers, doctors, and accountants, have been seeking updated conditions of service since 2008.

The ongoing strike, which began in August, has disrupted administrative operations at several public institutions, including the University of Ghana and the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC). At the University of Ghana, the industrial action has hindered course registration, accommodation arrangements, and access to online portals, with first-semester registration for the 2026/2027 academic year currently on hold.
