Ghana University Administrators strike continues pending official proposal
The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has stated it will not decide whether to suspend its ongoing strike until it receives and reviews a formal letter from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. Rev. Kwaku Karikari Amoah, President of GAUA, noted that while approximately 80 per cent of the issues triggering the industrial action have been addressed, a final decision depends on the National Executive Council reviewing the commission's specific proposals.
Following a meeting with the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, the association expressed that while progress has been made, they are not entirely satisfied with the current outcome. The Minister had appealed for a return to work by the weekend to ensure academic activities could resume by October 18, 2026.
Prof. Yarhands Dissou Arthur, Dean at the University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (USTED), warned that the strike threatens to disrupt the government's efforts to restore the pre-COVID academic calendar. He noted that the industrial action is already impacting academic work, specifically affecting first-year students whose classes were scheduled to begin.
